Electricity Facts

Things you should
know about Electricity.

Electricity experiments at school are safe because cells or power packs are used and they provide a low voltage.

Electricity

1.)  We use electricity every day.

2.)  Electricity can be natural -Tthere is electricity in the nerves of our bodies and a lightning bolt is a very violent form of electricity.

3.)  Lights us mains electricity, and so do things like cookers and television.

4.)  Mains electricity has a higher voltage than cells and therefore can be dangerous.

5.)  Metals are good electrical conductors.

6.)  Insulation is any material that does not conduct electricity.

7.)  Moving electricity is called an electric current.

8.)  Current is the amount of electricity that is flowing around a circuit.

9.)  Current is measured using an ammeter. The units for current are amps (A).

10.) Stephen Gray (1666-1736), a British chemist, was the first person to discover that electricity can flow through wires.

11.) It is much cheaper using electricity for the mains than from batteries.

Never touch the bare metal parts of any plug!

Never use something that has a damaged wire!

Never poke things into sockets!

Do not plug too many things into one socket!

Always keep electricity away from water!
