Using Senses - Making a Long Distance Call

Long-Distance Cup Call !

Materials you will need:

• String (10 metres )
• Two plastic cups or yogurt pots

Steps

1.  Make a very small hole in the bottom of both plastic cups.

2.  Thread one end of the string through the bottom of one cup so that the end of the string is being fed inside the cup and tie a knot inside the cup.

3. Thread the string through the other cup and tie a knot inside the cup as above.

4.  Have a friend hold one cup, you hold the other and slowly walk away from each other.. Make sure that the string is taut but not too tight and not slack.

5.  Whisper into your cup whilst your friend holds thier cup over their ear and listens to try to hear what you are saying.

The sound of your voice makes the string vibrate, carrying the sound down the string to your friend’s ear.

Check out how Sounds and Vibrations work on our Science Facts page.
