A rubber pipe usually connects to the base which provides gas and a metal tube directs the gas into a vertical shaft which is ignited at the top

They will usually have a twistable section at the base of the metal shaft which can vary the amount of air mixed with the gas which will produce a flickering lower temperature yellow flame or a much hotter blue flame.
